On December 25, 2022 — weeks after FTX gutted Solana's reputation — an anonymous community launched BONK as 'the first Solana dog coin, for the people, by the people,' airdropping roughly half its supply to active Solana participants instead of insiders, a grassroots morale boost in the depths of the bear. The lineage continued with dogwifhat (WIF), launched in late 2023 — a Shiba in a pink knit beanie that became one of the internet's most-shared images; in March 2024 its community crowdfunded over $690,000 in under four days to try to put the meme on the Las Vegas Sphere — though the display never ran: organizers never secured a deal with the venue and refunded backers in April 2025.
